The corporatisation of the University on 15 March 1998 has forced USM to prepare itself for the inevitable reduction in government grants. In line with this, various strategies to generate income have been devised by USM besides increasing emphasis on cost efficiency and increased productivity in all areas. On the whole, USM’s main thrust in generating income is through commercialization of research products, R&D contracts and strategic joint venture collaboration with the industrial sector.
In order to realise these strategies, USAINS Holding Sdn Bhd. has been established as USM’s corporate vehicle and functions as a commercial entity on behalf of USM. The main function of USAINS Holding is to act as the primary conduit in the process of assisting USM to generate much needed income to compensate for the reduction in allocations received from the federal government. AMDI also, through USAINS Holding Sdn. Bhd., will endeavour to conduct income generating activities through the provision offering laboratory and clinical services to clients in the IMT-GT triangle, commercialization of research products, as well as strategic joint venture collaborations with the industrial sector.
