Cluster Immunology, with an initial emphasis on immunology of cancer and herbal pharmaceuticals under the leadership of Assoc Prof Dr Ishak Mat made a beginning in 2002. In late 2004 & 2005 after much deliberation in various seminars and workshop, it was felt that the clinical component in areas of primary immunodeficiency and autoimmunity would boost the cluster further. Prof. Lokman Mohd Noh was invited to join the cluster in 2007. In 2009 The Director of AMDI through his EXCO mooted the idea of clusters to strengthen and diversify research traversing various related disciplines in AMDI with uniformity of purpose. Amongst it, was the Cluster Immunological Science.
Immunological science encompasses a study of immune system which includes clinical activity through observation and experiments. The cluster was developed to enhance application of fundamental immunology to clinical activity, to explore and create new knowledge in the science of immunology and to lead in research, innovation & technology building in USM.
Cluster Immunological Science is assuming a role as an advanced reference centre for immune mediated diseases in the care of patients providing tertiary level immunology laboratory investigations for the Northern regions of Peninsular Malaysia. It is also nurturing a postgraduate training program in clinical and fundamental Immunology at a level of Masters, Doctorate and Post doctoral.
CIS is to be the reference centre of excellence for immunological Science pertaining to patient care and fundamental research with the capabilities to sustain production of academics, researchers, clinical in immunology which is capable of competing with the best in the world.
